How to Shock a Green Pool: Step-by-Step Algae Guide

Few sights are more frustrating for a pool owner than opening their cover to find their pristine, sparkling water has turned into a murky, green swamp. Algae blooms can occur rapidly when chlorine levels drop, water temperatures rise, or after heavy rainfall washes organic waste into the pool. To clear a green pool, you cannot rely on simple daily filtration or standard sanitizer doses. You must superchlorinate the water—a process commonly referred to as "shocking." 1. What Causes Pool Water to Turn Green?

Green pool water is almost always caused by an active **algae infestation**. Algae spores are continuously introduced to pools by wind, rain, and swimwear.

Under standard conditions, free chlorine levels of **1 to 3 PPM** destroy these spores immediately. However, if free chlorine drops below 1.0 PPM, the spores can germinate and multiply exponentially, clouding the water and coating the pool walls in a green layer.

2. The Science of Superchlorination (Breakpoint)

To destroy a mature algae bloom, you must raise free chlorine levels to **10 times the combined chlorine concentration** (the threshold known as **breakpoint chlorination**).

4. Step-by-Step Green Pool Recovery Plan

Follow this protocol to restore clarity to your pool:

  1. Remove Debris: Use a leaf net to scoop out large organic debris. Debris consumes chlorine, rendering the shock treatment less effective.
